Stress and Porn:
Research suggests that people who compulsively consume pornography may have a malfunctioning stress system. One study found higher inflammation levels in people with hypersexuality, indicating abnormally high-stress levels. Another study observed abnormal oxytocin levels, also seen in other forms of addiction. These individuals couldn't stop producing cortisol, a natural steroid, even when given large doses, unlike people without a porn addiction.
Other studies found genetic alterations related to the body's stress response in people similar to those seen in alcohol-dependent individuals. These findings suggest that an inability to handle stress and anxiety healthily might contribute to compulsive sexual behaviours like porn consumption.
It's essential to recognize the link between compulsive sexual behaviour and a malfunctioning stress system. Compulsive porn consumption meets the criteria for addiction and can have serious negative consequences.
The good news is that change is possible. Research and the experiences of many people show that the negative effects of pornography can be managed and reversed over time. The brain can heal with sustained effort, even in cases of serious addiction. Guilt can motivate positive change, but shame can worsen porn habits. So, if you're trying to quit porn, be patient with yourself and your progress.
Think of it as building a muscle that gets stronger with time. The longer you stay away from porn, the easier it becomes. It just takes practice.
